The bay is roughly 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) south of Pottuvil, the market town, and 117 kilometers (73 miles) south of Batticaloa. It is situated 320 kilometers (200 miles) directly east of Colombo. The majority of people living in the region, known as Ullae locally, are Muslims; but, to the south of the village, there is a sizable Tamil and Sinhala community from Sri Lanka in addition to a number of foreign expats, most of whom are from Europe and Australia.
